MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) recently installed an animal deterrent system at its Kentland Substation to reduce electric outages caused by animals entering the facility.
“NIPSCO’s primary goal is to provide safe and reliable gas and electric service for our customers,” said NIPSCO General Manager Tim Dehring. “By installing this animal deterrent system, we are improving electric reliability for our customers in the Kentland area.”
The animal deterrent system provides a safe electrical barrier around the substation. Animals attempting to enter the substation receive a mild shock that stops them from going further.
“Animal deterrent systems have been installed at nine other NIPSCO substations over the last five years and has proven to be 100 percent effective in both eliminating these types of electric outages and in saving the animals from injury or death,” said Dehring. “We expect the same positive results for our customers in Kentland.”
