    The Environment

As part of the FERC licensing project we are required to identify the environmental factors effected by the project. Although no changes are proposed in the operation of the Norway and Oakdale Hydroelectric facilities, we will be examining water quality data, sediment quality data, aquatic resources, threatened and endangered species that live in the project area, terrestrial resources, wildlife resources and land management practices and aesthetics.

We do not anticipate any additional protection, mitigation or enhancement plans since we are proposing no changes in the operations of the facility. The hydroelectric facilities are located in an area of relatively high recreational and environmental value. Boating, fishing, water skiing, sailing, snowmobiling are popular activities during the various seasons. The Indiana Beach Amusement and water park borders the Norway facility. NIPSCO is working with all applicable regulatory agencies in looking at all of these environmental factors. NIPSCO will be conducting meetings to listen to peoples concerns and comments about environmental issues and suggestions for areas that may require additional environmental studies. After reviewing comments, we will prepare additional study plans if needed in consultation with the agency resources. Our license application will include an environmental report describing the results of studies and action that NIPSCO would propose for environmental protection.
